Many people have been caught speeding in Ireland on National Slow Down Day with one person caught travelling at 139 kilometres an hour on the N7 in Co Kildare.
Chief superintendent at the Garda National Traffic Bureau, Ray McMahon, says breaking the speed limit can have severe consequences.
"Every five kilometres per hour, makes a huge difference in the level of, and the chances of a fatality occurring with someone that had those speeds, so you know, going from 50, kilometres an hour up to 60 kilometres you're increasing substantially the chances of that accident becoming a fatal accident"
