Almost 500 patients on trolleys this morning

According to the latest figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation 483 patients are on trolleys.

That figure stands at 50 in Cork - 18 are waiting on a bed at the Mercy University Hospital, 31 at Cork University Hospital, and 1 in Bantry General Hospital.

The HSE figures, which doesn't count patients on trolleys in wards, show 349 patients, including two children, are waiting for a bed.

The INMO is meeting with the HSE shortly to discuss the overcrowding crisis.

Meanwhile, proposed changes to how emergencies are handled by hospitals could mean patients have to travel further to a major trauma centre.

Professor Anthony Staines from DCU says not every hospital should be doing everything.
