Almost 68,000 people are waiting for a driving test across the country

That's up more than 3,000 since the end of January, according to new figures from the Road Safety Authority.

It'll tell today's Oireachtas Transport Committee the backlog will take more than 20 weeks to clear when Level 5 restrictions ease.

Committee chairman, Fine Gael's Kieran O'Donnell, says the RSA must explain how it plans to deal with the issue:

"We need to see how many additional driving testers they need to take on board to make serious inroads into reducing the waiting times down to 10 weeks. This is about people who are currently we'll say, on learner permits, they are ready to sit a full driving test. For them, it could make a difference of between 30 and 80% onto their insurance premiums. This is about having a specific plan in place."
