Almost half of all serious injuries among children happen in the home

Falls from less than 2 meters, road traffic collisions and burns account for 70% of severe injuries, according to a new 6 year study.

A quarter of those injured are under 2-years-old, while injuries to the head, legs and arms are most common, making up almost two thirds of cases.

Emergency medicine consultant at Cork University Hospital and Clinical lead, Professor Conor Deasy, says the audit also found many severely injured children aren't arriving to hospital by ambulance:

"41% of patients were brought by their parent directly to the nearest emergency department. And this creates challenges for hospitals as there is no opportunity to provide a pre-alert or a warning which would allow a receiving trauma team prepare for the arrival of a child who was severely injured."
