Almost One Car A Night Has Been Stolen In Cork City Since January

Fears have been expressed that some of these cars are being used for so-called joy riding

Almost one car a night has been stolen in Cork city since January

That's according to Sinn Féin councillor Thomas Gould who was reacting to the news that 75 cars were stolen in the first quarter of this year - a spike of almost 70% on the same period last year

The issue was raised at yesterday's joint policing committee with fears expressed that some of these cars are being used for so-called joy riding

Local councillors say they're aware that gangs on the northside are doing handbrake skids, mounting kerbs and ramming gates in stolen cars and making life hell for local residents

Speaking to RedFM News Sinn Fein's Cllr Mick Nugent says he doesn't believe the problem is as serious as it was in the past but he says the guards need to crackdown on it in order to prevent joyriding gaining a foothold amongst a new generation
