An Post say local community can appeal their decision to close Ballineen Post office

This afternoon An Post issued a statement to RedFM News following our coverage of the closure of Ballineen post office.

Locals in a West Cork town have hit out at the closure of their local post office.

It's part of a consolidation plan by An Post to close 160 post offices around the country.

12 post offices in Cork are affected including in Ballineen where locals say they're devastated.

Our senior reporter Fiona O'Donovan has the full story from Ballineen for RedFM News (This report was broadcast on Tuesday Sept 11th):

This afternoon An Post issued the following statement to RedFM News:

Statement From An Post
Ballineen post office will close today (Friday). Customers will in the first instance transfer to Enniskean (some 1.3 km away) and will also have the option of later transferring to other offices in the area, for example, Coppeen, Dunmanway, Teerelton or Clonakilty. Consolidating the business from Ballineen to other offices’ will  boost their transaction levels and viability for the future. The majority of these closures came as a result of an agreement with the Irish Postmasters Union agreed in May of this year.

The post office at Ballineen had been run for some months by a member of the O’Driscoll family following the sad passing of our Postmaster colleague in January of 2018.

An Post has no plans to advertise the contract to provide post offices services in Ballineen although it is open for the local community to appeal An Post’s decision to close the office.
