Animal rights group slams current animal protection legislation

It comes on foot of a vicious attack on a dog in Mayfield over the weekend.

An animal welfare group has hit out at the legislation that is in place to protect animals.

John Carmody from ARAN was speaking in the wake of a brutal attack on a small dog in Mayfield called Marvin who died a slow death after he had his throat slit at the weekend.

The group has added another €5,000 euro to the reward fund for information established on the Neil Prendeville Show following the attack so it has now been closed and stands at €11,000.

On Monday Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney contacted RedFM and said there is tough legislation in place through the new Animal Health and Welfare bill which includes fines of up to €250,000 and a five year jail sentence to deal with animal cruelty cases.

However speaking on the Neil Prendeville Show John Carmody from ARAN says the laws are not being enforced.
