Anomaly Between Two Acts Leaves A Cork Councillor With No Maternity Leave

Cllr Danielle Twomey had her youngest child five months ago and returned to work four weeks after the birth

An anomaly between the Local Government Act and legislation has been revealed by a Cork Sinn Fein Councillor with a young baby who is not entitled to maternity leave..

Cllr Danielle Twomey discovered that if she is off work for more than six months to mind her baby, then she would be barred from serving on the local authority as it would be deemed that she had resigned..

She had her youngest child five months ago and returned to work four weeks after the birth

The Maternity Protection Act states that a woman whether self-employed or employed is entited to 18 weeks paid maternity leave, however as Cllr Twomey is an elected public representative and not a Council employeee she is not entitled to maternity leave from the local authority...

Speaking to RedFM News she says the Local Government Act is discriminatory
