Ban On Single Use Plastic Comes Into Place This Weekend
Ten of the most commonly found litter items will be banned such as cotton buds, plastic straws and stirrers
A deposit refund scheme for plastic bottles and cans will also be introduced toward the end of next year.
Mindy O'Brien, Coordinator for environmental group Voice, says its a great step forward in reducing plastic waste:
"I think it's just making people aware of the amount of plastic that we're using every day. The single use nature of it, and looking for alternatives. And what we're hoping is a dynamic switch in reuse/refill culture, so that instead of getting a disposable container, you will actually get a container that's usable. You reuse it, and then you bring it back, it's washed, it's reused again. So that's what we want to look forward, but this is the first step."
