Belarus accused of aviation hijacking after it forced Ryanair plane to land in its country yesterday

The flight - which was going from Greece to Lithuania - was forced to divert to Minsk so an opposition journalist could be arrested

It’s believed his girlfriend and some Belarusian spies were also removed.

Supporters of the journalist say it’s likely he’s being tortured and they fear for his life.

Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney says European leaders have to act.

"I think you will see decisions taken by the EU to target sanctions or to increase the level of sanctions against Belarus, but I mean I think if the EU doesn't respond firmly and directly, then I think that will be seen by Belarus as, as weakness."
