Bertie Ahern apologies for his mistakes

He is giving evidence at the Banking Inquiry.

Bertie Ahern's apologised for the mistakes he made during his time in Government.

In evidence to the banking inquiry this afternoon the former Taoiseach says the pain of the crisis on people "breaks his heart", but he did his very best to do the right thing for the Irish people.

He says Brian Cowen and the late Brian Lenihan did their best to manage the crisis but claimed that if he was around he may have been able to put a lean on Jean Claude Trichet in the European Central Bank.

He insisted the Government's he led did a lot of right things too.
