BREAKING: Broadcaster Gay Byrne Has Died
Veteran broadcaster Gay Byrne has passed away at the age of 85 years old.
The beloved host has passed away after a long illness.
He is survived by his wife Kathleen and daughters Crona and Suzy and their families.
Byrne fronted The Late Late Show when it first aired in 1962, going on to become the longest running chat show in the world.
Gay hosted his final daily radio show on RTE in 1998 and his final Late Late Show the following summer. However he returned to Lyric FM to host a regular jazz programme until he was diagnosed with cancer in 2017.
Our very own Neil Prendeville paid tribute to the broadcasting legend saying, "So saddened to hear of the death of Ireland's greatest broadcaster, Gay Byrne. He was a huge influence on my broadcasting career. I was in awe of his natural talent and he laid the foundation for us all. May he rest in peace."
