Broad welcome for Apple jobs announcement Leeside
1,000 new positions are coming on stream by the middle of 2017.
Apple's plan to grow it's workforce by 1,000 is seen as a huge vote of confidence in Cork.
That's according to the City's Lord Mayor Cllr Chris O'Leary who was reacting to the news that Apple is to expand it's Hollyhill campus to 6,000 employees by the middle of 2017.
It's not yet known if the positions are short or long term contracts but it's understood that some of the positions will be for graduates.
Apple's CEO Tim Cook jetted into Cork this afternoon to personally unveil what is one of the biggest job announcements since the economic downturn.
The band "A Great Big World" will be taking to the stage to entertain employees this evening as part of the announcement at the Hollyhill facility.
The tech giant is seen as an important employer in Ireland and is also partnered with the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland to support research in offshore energy technology.
Speaking to RedFM News the Lord Mayor says the announcement is a strong endorsement for Cork.
