Broad Welcome To News That Housing Minister Is Urging Local Councils To Support Communities In Fight Against Litter

It comes as concerns have been raised by locals and councillors about the amount of litter being left behind by day trippers at coastal towns and beaches across Cork

Crosshaven made the news last weekend after local councillor Audrey Buckley spoke out about the large numbers who descended on the town and the amount of litter they left behind.

At the end of April County Council Chief Executive Tim Lucey said that if had his way there would be no bins in these area saying €3 million is spent on cleaning and litter management every year which he says is not a good use of taxpayers money.

Speaking to RedFM News Cllr Audrey Buckley says she was quite taken aback by his comments:

"It was very disappointing to hear that, when he said that, a few weeks ago. I've been fighting since I've been a counsellor, for compactable bins, to change the bins. A lot of our bins aren't fit for purpose. So it's very welcome news that Minister Darragh O'Brien has announced that he will be talking to local councils, to get them to support communities, where it is or is concerned."
