Bruton and Kenny speak out as teachers strike sees hundreds of schools close

The Taoiseach says there won't be a loosening of the purse strings to increase public sector spending. 

Hundreds of secondary schools are closed today, including 50 here in Cork, as teachers seek a pay deal.

But Taoiseach Enda Kenny says a large increase in public spending would not be sound economics or socially just.

The escalation of the teachers dispute follows a pay deal negotiated for thousands of Garda officers last week.

But Minister Richard Bruton has warned that Garda pay rises will have to come from the Justice Department's budget.

And says similar increases for teachers could mean fewer services:
