Calls for action on fatal overdose figures

Calls are being made for a national overdose prevention strategy to be put in place in the wake of recent figures which show that one person dies everyday in Ireland from an overdose. Homeless and Drug Service Merchants Quay Ireland also say that allowing lay people to administer Naloxone, a drug given to people who have overdosed, could prevent fatalities. This week RedFM News and the Neil Prendeville Show have been putting the spotlight on issues surrounding fatal overdoses which are now twice as prevalent annually as the number of road fatalities in the country. Leeside between 20 and 30 fatal overdoses have been recorded every year in Cork since 2004.
