Calls for increased Garda resources in Carrigaline

Public reps in Carrigaline and other Cork suburbs are calling for increased Garda resources following a serious assault on a 17 year old over the weekend.
Emergency services were called to the Waterpark area of the town on Saturday night after the teenager was attacked by another youth, who has since appeared in court charged in relation to the incident. The 17 year old, who cannot be named due to his age was released on bail.
The victim sustained serious slash injuries to his face and stab wounds to the body and underwent surgery at CUH.
Cork County Council are to write to Garda Commisisoner Drew Harris to urgently prioritise more officers in the wake of the incident.
Speaking to RedFM News, Cllr Seamus McGath says the lack of Garda resources isn't limited to just Carrigaline.
"There isn't any major disparity in the number of Gardai per 1,000 of population.
"We had to make it an issue of Cork suburbs.
"It's been well documented that those communities, the likes of Douglas, Ballincollig, Carrigaline, Passage West - those communities feel they are underserved.
"The Garda station hours are not regular, they're not open a sufficient number of hours per day and so on.
"Then there's visibility, which is the critical issue - people want to see Gardaí walking in the community, cycling in the community, patrolling in the community."
