Calls for the government to invest in the early childhood sector

The co-owner of Cork based early years childcare and educational facilities is appearing before the Joint Oireachtas Committee.

The co-owner of three Cork based early years childcare and educational facilities is calling on the Government to urgently invest in the sector.

Michele Akerlind of Cheeky Cherubs Early Years Schools is appearing before the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health & Children on Thursday as part of an early childhood delegation to talk about the issues challenging their sector.

Michele says 80% of their income is spent on wages as they only employ qualified staff and while over half of their employees are graduates many of them can't secure car loans of mortgages due to their low wages.

She says staff earn around  €9.50 an hour meaning that their take home pay stands around €350 a week.

Speaking to RedFM News Michele says to date they have not received any support or investment and this urgently needs.
