Calls to increase price of alcohol to protect vulnerable groups in society

There have been calls for minimum unit pricing on alcohol to reduce the number of harmful drinkers in Ireland. It's hoped the move would benefit some of the more vulnerable groups in society including school leavers preparing for college this September. 1.3 million people in Ireland are classified as harmful drinkers - while almost two-thirds of young people between the ages of 18 and 24 said they engaged in binge drinking. It's hoped that tackling pricing will change attitudes toward drinking especially for those begining college this year. It comes as a recent study suggests just 5% of UCC students surveyed do not drink alcohol.
