Calls to increase the legal age for buying alcohol in off-licenses in Cork

Increasing the legal age for buying alcohol in off-licenses would be difficult to enforce. That's according to Alcohol Action Ireland who were reacting to calls from Cork's most senior garda to combat alcohol-related crime by allowing 18-year-olds to buy drink in bars but not in off licenses. Chief Superintendant of Cork City Garda division Michael Finn said he would back such a scheme as the vast majority of crime in his division stems from the cheap availability of alcohol to this age group.
