Carrignavar Community Council call for waste water treatment facility in the village to be upgraded

The future of a village close to the city will depend on whether a waste water treatment facility is upgraded or not.

That's the view of Carrignavar Community Council who say people are being denied permission to build new houses and developers are overlooking the village, despite plenty of brownfield sites in the area.

The community council are calling for the facility on College Road in the village, which they say hasn't been upgraded in around 40 years, to be included in Irish Water's current development plan.

Speaking to RedFM News, Tom Howard from the local Community Council says the construction of a new school in August adds to the urgency of the upgrade.

"We've 350 students up there, and what we want to do is to utilise the school into the future. If there's new houses built, there'll be new families to maintain the numbers in the national school and the secondary school.

"Council have to recommend that they're upgraded or replaced, but funding has to come from central government through the County Council to give to Irish Water to upgrade the plant - that's the problem."
