City Council Chief Executive Hopes The McKinnon Review Will Be Adopted as Government Policy

Under the proposal the city's population will swell by 100,000

Cork City Council's Chief Executive is hopeful that the findings of the McKinnon Review on Local Government in Cork will be incorporated into the Draft National Planning Framework this Summer.

The group proposed a boundary extension instead of a merger of Cork City and County Council.

It means areas such as Ballincollig, Cork Airport, Blarney, Glanmire, Little Island and Carrigtwohill will now fall under the remit of Cork City Council meaning the city's population will swell by 100,000

City Council Chief Executive Ann Doherty says the next step is for the report to be considered by Cabinet and adopted as Government policy, in order for it to be  implemented by the 2019 local government elections.

Meanwhile many members of Cork County Council have expressed concern about the impact of a boundary extension, speaking to RedFM News the County Mayor Cllr Seamus McGrath outlined some of his concerns
