City Councillor Says County's Alternative To MacKinnon Review Is Unworkable

A city councillor says the proposal that Cork County Council offered as an alternative to the recommendation of the MacKinnon Review was unworkable.

The report developed by the MacKinnon Review Group recommended extending the city boundary to include areas such as Cork Airport, Ballincollig, Blarney, Little Island, Glounthaune, Glanmire and Carrigtwohill.

The County Council countered this by offering to hand over control of Frankfield, Douglas, Grange, and Ballyvolane to the city, but this proposal was rejected.

The MacKinnon Implementation Group are meeting around now to receive presentations from both local authorities on the city boundary extension.

However delays to the process are expected after Cork County Council announed it was to seek legal action on the MacKinnon recommendations and invoke a section of the Local Government Act 1991 which will allow it to put its views out to public consultation.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Tim Brosnan explained to RedFM News why the City Council rejected the County Council's alternate proposal and why he believes the city boundary needs to extended:
