Cobh bullying victim to address public meeting

Stricter controls are needed around cyber-bullying. That's according to the organisers of a meeting to address the issue in Cobh this evning. Earlier this month, the Department of Education announced new anti-bullying guidelines for parents, teachers and children. There was a broad welcome to the proposal - however, Sinn Fein representatives in Cork believe they don't go far enough. Deputy Jonathan O'Brien says there needs to be stricter controls around the use of social media in conjunction with creating greater awareness among young people. He says more must be done to educate pupils, teachers and parents of the dangers that can arise from cyber-bullying. Tonight's meeting is being held in the Commodore Hotel in Cobh at 8pm. Local teenager Shauna Sisk will be speaking out about her own experiences of bullying which became so intense that she attempted to take her own life. She recently took the decision to speak out in an attempt to encourage other victims not to tackle the problem alone.
