Hundreds turned out to honour the athletics star and Sonia admitted she was "very proud and deeply grateful" to her home town for honouring her career.
The statue was unveiled to mark the 20th anniversary of Sonia's gold medal-winning performance at the 1995 Gothenburg World Championships.
