Commemoration of 100th Anniversary of US Altantic fleet to Ireland held in Cobh

A commemorative plaque marking the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the US Atlantic fleet to Ireland in 1917 was unveiled in Cobh today.
UCC student Lizzie Helmer, the great-great grand-daughter of Commander Joseph Taussig, who led the flotilla of six Naval Destroyers into Cork harbour on 4 May 1917 performed the unveiling.
Over 9,000 US navy personnel were stationed in Cobh, Haulboline, Ringaskiddy, Passage West, Aghada, Bere Island and Whiddy Island.
The event was organised by the Port of Cork to acknowledge the role of Cork Harbour in the US naval involvement in World War 1.
