Cork Born Mother Jones Honoured in US

A Cork woman is being honoured in Illinois today for her pioneering work in the trade union movement in the United States
A portion of earth is being removed from the grave of Mary Harris, also known as Mother Jones, so it can be returned to her birthplace in Shandon.
She left Cork in 1837 before settling in the United States where she became one of the toughest organisers for the United Mine Workers of America.
A plaque in her memory was mounted in Shandon Street on the 175th anniversary of her birth and now the Mother Jones festival in her honour runs annually in August.
A formal ceremony is taking place in Illinois today where a small sample of clay will be removed from her grave and transported to Cork ahead of the festival which runs from August 1st to 5th .
