Cork Cardiologist calls for heart screening programme.

A senior Cork based cardiologist is appealing for a publically-funded heart screening programme to be rolled out in order to save lives.

Dr Heiko Kindler who is based at the Bon Secours Hospital is calling for the programme to identify hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is the leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young adults.

The condition, which affects one in 500 people has come to public attention following a number of tragic deaths on Irish sports fields.

Dr Kindler said that cardiac screening should be a routine test and that funding it publicly makes sense..
