Cork Deaf Association welcomes recognition of Irish Sign Language

The Cork Deaf Association has welcomed the the passing of a Bill in the Seanad to recognise Irish Sign Language in law as an official language.

The group says if the bill were to become law it would mean that every public body would have to provide services through sign language, television programmes would have to be subtitled, there would be better interpreting quality and improved educational supports.

One in seven people across the country are deaf or have impaired hearing and over 35,000 people use Irish Sign Language daily, 

Speaking to RedFM News manager of Cork Deaf Association Geri O'Grady says the passing of the bill is a great achievement as it has been rejected on two previous occasions in the Seánad:
