Cork Farmer Says Many In Sector Feel Like They're Being Scapegoated

Alan Jagoe from the Carrigaline branch of the IFA was one of around 50 farmers who took part in a protest in Bandon earlier today to highlight the difficulties facing them

Teagasc estimates that only around one third of farms are currently viable and the IFA say cuts to CAP payments could lessen that number even further.

They are also concerned about the impact of carbon emissions targets on the farming and food sector and say many can't see a future for their children.

Speaking to RedFM News, Alan Jaygoe says rural towns like Bandon rely heavily on agriculture:

"We are the life blood of rural villages, rural towns. We see Bandon town here: the mart, the factory up the road, the cheese factory over in Enniskeane, you've got the merchants, you've got accountants and solicitors, you have the shops, you have towns like here in Bandon, Midleton, Kanturk and Skibbereen: they all depend on a strong agricultural, farming community, and that's why we're here today."
