Cork filmmaker hopes to inspire others

An Irish filmmaker and former UCC graduate says he hopes his success in securing a place on the Oscars shortlist will inspire others in the film industry here Leeside.

The industry has been one of the worst affected by the ongoing pandemic as producing films is problematic with current restrictions as well as the inability of venues to host the productions infront of a live audience.

Shaun O'Connor's 'A White Horse', which stars Cork actros Cora Fenton and Amber Deasy, has secured a place on the Academy Awards' 2021 longlist after it was awarded Best Irish Short at the Foyle Film Festival in 2019.

Speaking to RedFM News Shaun O'Connor says those in the industry have so many additional challenges to overcome.

"As an independent filmmaker there's so many ups and downs, sop many applications for funding, so many times you get knocked back, which is the same throughout all the creative awards.

"Especially in the last year, it's been so difficult for people involved in film, theatre etc.

"So to get an award like that, or to get on a long list for the Academy Awards, it's just so gratifying, and it really gives you a lot of motivation to move on to new projects."
