Cork gardai investigate serious assault

Gardai in Cork city have launched an investigation after an assault which has left a man in hospital with serious head injuries. Gardai believe the assault happened on Ballyhooley Road near St Luke's sometime before 1.10am when a man was found lying on the ground with serious head injuries. The emergency services were called and he was rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where it's understood he remains in a serious condition. Gardai cordoned off the scene and garda technical experts have begun a forensic examination of the area in a search for clues to identify the man's assailant. Officers have also begun investigating if there is CCTV footage in the area that could assist them while they have also begun door to door inquiries. Officers have yet to establish the identity of the victim and anyone with information is asked to contact Mayfield Garda Station on 021-4558510.
