Cork Judge Slams Gratuitous Street Violence Fuelled By Alcohol

Judge Gerard O'Brien says strong alcoholic shots are making going out at night really dangerous

Judge Gerard O’Brien was speaking as he sentenced a young man for an unprovoked drunken assault on another young man outside a pub in Cork city two years ago.

He said strong alcoholic shots are making going out at night really dangerous.

28 year old Adrian Heller, of 68 Friars Walk, was before the Circuit Criminal Court for sentencing after he pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to a young man on April 22, 2017 .

The victim spent four days in hospital after being hit once by the accused who was so intoxicated, he had to be pepper sprayed.

Sentencing in the case was put back for one year and Adrian Heller was released on bail with the judge directing him to comply with the directions of the probation service regarding a suitable alcohol programme and to undertake some voluntary work that would benefit others in society.

Michelle Puckhaber from the Crime Victims Helpline says this sort of drink fuelled violence is something they regularly deal with.
