Cork Mail Centre staff set up action group to fight the closure of the centre

Staff at Cork Mail Centre have established an action group to fight the closure of the centre and defend their jobs

The phased closure of the centre, beginning in September, would lead to the loss of 240 jobs.

An Post says the Cork centre is  operating below 25% capacity and says it will offer exit packages, redeployment opportunities and will assist employees in finding alternative work.

However workers have now come together and will stage a peaceful protest against the planned closure on Saturday week in the city.

In a statement the group say they fail to see the necessity of closing a strategically placed hub when An Post is experiencing a major boom in the parcel market.

Speaking to RedFM News John Ahern says they are calling on An Post and the Government to respect the decision of the Dáil which voted overwhelmingly last week to support saving the Mail Centre and the jobs
