Cork man sent forward for trial for impeding hit and run case

A 71 year old Cork man has been sent forward for trial on a charge of impeding the prosecution of his son on a charge of dangerous driving causing the death of a father of four.

Dan Joe Fitzgerald from Meelin, Newmarket is charged with acting to impede the prosecution of his son, Shane on a charge of dangerous driving causing the death of 42 year old Paud O'Leary on July 1st 2012.
 
Paud O'Leary was out cycling on the morning in question when he was struck and knocked off his bike at Scra-han-fada near Gneeve-guilla by a 4x4 vehicle that failed to stop.
 
His body was later found by relatives searching for him and gardai began an investigation to try and identify the hit and run driver 

Two years ago Shane Fitzgerald, was convicted of dangerous driving causing the death of Paud O'Leary and sentenced to  to six and a half years in jail with the final 18 months suspended. He was also banned from driving 

Today at Cork District Court, Judge Olan Kelleher sent Dan Joe Fitzgerald forward for trial by judge and jury to appear at the Circuit Criminal Court on February 16th
