Cork Man Who Lost Wife & Daughter In Crash Calls For Strict Enforcement On Learner Drivers

"We're living a life sentence of loss"

That's according to a Cork man who lost his wife and daughter in a crash in North Cork in 2015.

Noel Clancy says the ordeal will never be over for his family and he has once again called for tougher enforcement on learner and unaccompanied drivers.

His wife Geraldine and his daughter Louise were killed when their car ploughed into a flooded ditch near Fermoy following a collision with another vehicle - the occupant of which was an unaccompanied learner driver.

The Irish Examiner reports that those attending yesterday's inquest were told that both women died from acute cardiorespiratory failure.

The 58-year-old called on the transport Minister Shane Ross to move forward with legislation before the end of 2017 that would bestow increased powers on gardaí to impound cars being driven by unaccompanied learner drivers.

Speaking outside the court afterward Noel says although the new legislation will be too late for his family he hopes it will save lives in the future:
