Cork mother Vera Twomey confronts the Health Minister

Vera Twomey who has been campaigning for the legalisation of cannabis products for medicinal use for her 6 year old daughter, confronted Minister Simon Harris during his visit to Mallow General Hospital

A Cork woman and her husband have confronted the Health Minister in emotional scenes in Mallow this morning.

Vera Twomey says she has been campaigning for the legalisation of cannabis products for medicinal uses, so that her six-year-old daughter Ava can have the oil prescribed to her.

The Aghabullogue Mum hit out at Simon Harris after a meeting she had with the Health Products Regulatory Authority yesterday where she claims she was told that Minister Harris had the ability to authorise a ministerial exemption for medicinal use of cannabis without prosecution.

In response to the confrontation this morning the Minister said he was doing his best and pledged that once a review group on the issue reported to him at the end of the month and he received an application from a doctor on Ava's behalf he would look for an exemption so Ava could be prescribed the oil.

RedFM News has learned that the Minister has completed his visit of Mallow General Hospital and is curently meeting Vera and Paul privately.

We'll have more from that meeting in coming hours.

Speaking to RedFM News after the heated exchange in Mallow Vera says she didn't want to confront him like this but she says she was left with no choice after protesting in the bitter cold outside the Dail last night.
