Cork On Ice Could Be Under Threat

The warning comes due to the high level of personal injury awards being handed down in the Irish Courts

Bill Cremin of Cool Running Events who runs some of the country's biggest ice-skating rinks says the level of awards being made has led him to worry about whether or not they will continue to secure insurance for these events in the future or that premiums will be so high that an ice skating ticket may have to cost a customer up to €50

Bill Cremin was speaking out after the Court of Appeal upheld a High Court judgement of €65,000 for a personal injuries claim arising out of a fall at their Dublin Rink in 2015 in which a young girl suffered a hand injury

Speaking to RedFM News Bill Cremin of Cool Running Events is calling for the judiciary to adopt a sensible approach

"The Judicial Council meets to look at personal injury awards, and specifically the Book of Quantum on the 20th of February, we're just asking the judiciary, to be realistic. Be sensible about this. I mean, for sure, I think people know us for the last 17 years in Cork, we're good operators. People of course can take a case, and they're free to take whatever cases they want,  but when these cases are successful, then the awards have got to be proportionate with the injuries. And I suppose that's really what we're asking the judges to look at"
