Cork Principal: 6th Year Students Need To Know What Form The Leaving Cert Will Take

Aaron Wolfe from Coláiste Éamann Rís says this years final year students are in the unique position of having both years of the Leaving Cert cycle disrupted by the pandemic.

Education Minister Norma Foley had said that the traditional exams would go ahead, however her department later said it would explore 'alternative options' for the exam after a survey from the Irish Secondary Student's Union found there was just 4% support for the plan.

Calculated grades based on a system of continuous assessment between now and the summer is one option...

However speaking to RedFM News, Aaron Wolfe from Coláiste Éamann Rís says students and teachers need immediate clarity now if that's to succeed:

"They wouldn't have the same body of work that was there last year; our current six years don't have summer exams because they weren't in school. So we would need to put on exams to assess them now. We don't have a Pre yet which we had last year, but if we knew now, maybe we could introduce it in February, March, April, May, June- give out these exams, correct them and give students an assessment that way. It's thinking outside the box."
