Cork Prison confiscate smuggled mobile phones

There has been a 10 fold increase in seizures of mobile phones in Cork Prison this year.

The €50 million euro prison installed new technology to reduce the number of contraband items being smuggled into the building by friends and family of prisoners.

All of the outdoor recreation areas have been covered with netting making it impossible for contraband to be thrown over the prison walls.

There were 21 seizures of drugs and 17 improvised weapons by Prison Officers, which is comparable to the number seized in the Old Cork Prison in 2015.

Speaking at the launch of the New Cork Prison earlier this year Govenor Patrick Dawson said smuggling is still an issue in prisons around the country:
