Cork Prison Facing Serious Challenges

It is being reported that Cork prison is facing a combination of very serious challenges. The committal levels are of particular concern as it has emerged that the prison has been struggling to deal with chronic overcrowding for years. The Irish Penal Reform Trust said that efforts must be made to cut the high number of offenders being sent to Cork Prison, particularly for not paying court fines. Figures published this week in the Irish Examiner show a sharp rise in committals for the offence. An inadequate building with slopping out, overcapacity and poor mental health services have all been identified as areas of concern. It is hoped a new prison facility for the county will address some of these issues with proposals that cells accomodate two inmates. Work on the new facility for the county is expected to commence in the coming weeks.
