Cork prison officers call for safety concerns to be addressed

Calls have been made for prison officers to be issued with batons, pepper spray and body cameras in Cork Prison.

That's according to the Prisoner Officers Association, who are attending the second day of their annual conference where safety, pay issues and staff levels will continue to be discussed.

Representatives have raised concerns about the ability of staff in Cork prison, to deliver workshop activites for prisoners safely, due to low staffing levels.

They say they are left open to attack by prisoners while facilitating these workshops, as all prisoners are released during these times.

Speaking to RedFM News POA representative Jim Mitchell says in order to properly facilitate these initiatives adequate staff levels is crucial:
