Cork senator calls on Bank of Ireland to reconsider closure of rural Cork branches

It emerged yesterday that Bank of Ireland is closing 88 branches in the Republic, nine of those are here in Cork; in Glanmire, Bantry, Cobh, Dunmanway, Kanturk, Millstreet, Mitchelstown and Youghal.

In North Cork the closure of Kanturk and Millstreet branches have been described as a huge blow to people living in the vast hinterland of these North Cork areas.

Meanwhile concerns have been expressed in West Cork that the closure of the Dunmanway and Bantry branch will have negative impact on communities with one disability activist saying it will disproportionately affect people with disabilities from these areas as many are not in a position to use online banking.

Many people in rural Cork say they're now faced with the prospect of having to change financial institution which it's feared will cause issues such as delays in disability or carer’s allowance payments.
