Cork Social Welfare Fraudsters Caught In Major Swoop

Social Welfare frausters in Cork have been targeted in an operation that is expected to save the state more the €1.5m. Fraudsters include parents with a cohaibting partner that were claiming the One Parent Fmaily allowance and a woman who claimed up to €43,000 by flying in and out of Cork from London. A total of 33 claimants were targeted by the Department of Social Protection's special investigations unit. The operation named 'Ear to the Ground 2' uncovered 14 parents who had the allowance had a cohabiting partner. The 19 other parents were moved to a 'more appropriate lower payment'. The operation is expected to save the government €1.5 million. It comes after social welfare inspectors identified in the region of 50 fraudsters flying in and out of Cork to claim social welfare. This targeted inspection is expected to save the government €700,000.
