Cork TD Appeals To Government To Do More To Support Rural Post Offices Which Are Struggling To Stay Open

The Irish Postmasters Union has said that from July 1st, 875 Postmaster-operated offices face a reduction of around 20 per cent in government or state payments, which they believe would leave many Post Offices untenable

The Rural Independent Group has called for immediate state intervention to prevent the closure of post offices across the country.

Speaking to RedFM News, Independent TD for Cork South West, Michael Collins says these post offices are not getting the support they need:

"We have been pleading with the government to increase businesses in the post office sector, in relation to banking, in relation to Motor Tax of cars. There's lots of things that the post office can offer to people because they're a very popular open in every rural town and village but sadly, it's falling on deaf ears. And if this continues, we will see another lot of post offices closing, but these tend to be caused by self because basically, they're not going to have an income and support by the state like they used to be, and that's closing them the back door instead of the front door."
