Cork TD bringing forward proposals to overhaul protections given to workers when employer goes bust

The issue has come to the fore as a result of the liquidation of Debenhams with staff holding protests outside the former stores over their redundancy terms.
However this issue affects workers in many other companies when they go out of business.
Cork Solidarity TD Mick Barry says workers need to be prioritised when companies collapse:
"I'm proposing legislation which would change the law in two regards. First of all, that when it comes to pay out from a liquidators pot, that workers should be at the very head of the queue. And second of all, that the collective agreements where they are unpaid- such as a collective redundancy agreement- would be considered in liquidation law as a debt, thereby increasing the chances of a pay-out."
