Cork TD: protections must be put in place as a matter of urgency before more people lose their jobs

Solidarity TD Mick Barry says that while the government won't be opposing his so-called "Debenhams Bill", they will seek a one year deferral to allow an independent forum to consider the issue.

The bill to put former employees at the head of the queue during liquidations is being proposed in the Dáil at 10am this morning.

It follows the collapse of retailers such as Debenhams, Arcadia and Carphone Warehouse resulting in hundreds of job losses in the City.

Speaking to RedFM News, Mick Barry says stalling the bill for a year is a waste of time:

"Fianna Fail and Fine Gael have had a long, long time to change the law and improve workers' rights in liquidation situations. The Vita Cortex sit-in was nearly 10 years ago. The Clery's scandal was six years ago. A special report was drawn up for them by Nessa Cahill and Kevin Duffy five years ago and they have failed to act on their recommendations. It is time for action on these issues not more timewasting."
