Cork TD Says "No Good Reason" For Aer Lingus To Lay-Off Workers During Upgrades To Cork Airport This Autumn

The airport will close from the 10th September to the 22nd November to carry out works on its main runway

Sinn Féin's Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire says Aer Lingus workers are concerned that if they are laid off for the 10 week period, they will be pressured into accepting new contracts with less favourable terms and conditions, or not asked to return at all.

He is calling on the Minister for Transport to ensure that no Aer Lingus worker is laid off at Cork Airport.

Speaking to RedFM News, Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire says these workers need to be kept on:

"The Aer Lingus workers, and indeed many workers, in Cork Airport across many companies and bodies are very worried at this point in time. At the minute, the point is that they are facing a temporary layoff because of the runway closure. Now, as far as I'm concerned, Aer Lingus are a company that have got huge government supports in recent times. I appreciate they're under pressure but there is no good reason that they wouldn't keep these workers on."
