Cork TD to raise plight of three facilities workers at Cork Airport who were made redundant in the Dail

The three OCS Ireland staff were made redundant on a compulsory basis today, despite being willing to be laid off until they are needed again, according to SIPTU.

Mick Barry TD says OCS are under contract at the airport for cleaning, baggage security and providing assistance to passengers with reduced mobility.

SIPTU says it will ballot their members at the airport for strike action next week in response to the redundancies.

Cork Airport, SIPTU and OCS have been contacted for comment.

Speaking to RedFM News, Deputy Barry says he plans to raise the issue in the Dáil:

"Cork Airport need to urgently intervene to get OCS to cop themselves on, and to withdraw the threat of compulsory redundancies. OCS are in receipt of state aid in the form of the employment wage subsidy scheme. They shouldn't even be considering compulsory redundancies. Now the last thing that Cork airport needs at this time is to be hit by a strike, but they might end up sleepwalking into one if urgent action isn't taken to stop these redundancies."
