Corks Fr Mathew Statue on Patrick street set for a makeover.

The iconic Fr Mathew Statue on Patrick St will be surrounded by scaffolding and protective covering for the duration of the repair work.

Repair work is currently underway following approval of funding to improve the statues appearance from Cork City Council.

Father Theobald Mathew known as the Apostle of Temperance served for most of his life in Cork.

He was known and loved in Cork for his efforts to alleviate distress during the cholera epidemic of 1832 and during the Great Famine.

He was also responsible for the purchase of the botanic gardens in Ballyphehane and the establishment of St Joseph’s cemetery on that site.
